Nonprofit Cost Auditor
Install guide
About five minutes. These steps follow Anthropic's help pages as of October 30, 2026; if a menu has moved, their pages are the source.
Requirements
- A Claude account on a plan with skills. Anthropic lists Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise (Using skills in Claude).
- Code execution turned on. Skills need it, and Anthropic says it's on by default for individual plans (Create and edit files).
- Team and Enterprise: an owner must allow skills and code execution in Organization settings > Plugins & skills (Policy tab). An owner can also add the skill for everyone (provisioning skills).
- Claude on the web (claude.ai). Skills you enable there also load in Claude Code when you sign in with the same account.
Steps
- Download the ZIP from the link in your purchase email. Keep it zipped: Claude wants the ZIP itself. Its name is
nonprofit-cost-auditor.zip. - Check code execution. Settings > Capabilities, turn on "Code execution and file creation". Newer layouts call it "Create and edit files".
- Upload the skill. Go to Customize > Skills, click "+", then "+ Create skill", then "Upload a skill", and choose the ZIP.
- Turn it on. Make sure "nonprofit-cost-auditor" shows as enabled in your skills list.
- Start a new chat, attach your expense export, and paste the starter prompt below.
Starter prompt
Copy this, fill in the brackets, and attach your file:
Use the Nonprofit Cost Auditor to review the attached expenses and find savings. We're a [charity / church / arts nonprofit...] called [name], and the file covers [the last 12 months].
Claude will ask a few follow-up questions, then write the report. No file handy? Try the sample expense file (CSV) first.
Getting a good export
- QuickBooks Online: Reports, then "Transaction Detail by Account" (or "Expenses by Vendor Detail"), set the dates to the last 12 months, then Export to Excel or CSV.
- A bank or card: download the statement as CSV for the last 12 months.
- No export? Type your subscriptions with what you pay and how often (for example "Zoom, $16.99, monthly").
Troubleshooting
- "Skill folder name doesn't match the skill name" or "Missing required SKILL.md"
- The ZIP was unzipped and zipped again, or renamed inside. Upload the original ZIP from your email; download a fresh copy if needed.
- There's no Skills section, or no upload button
- Turn on code execution (step 2). On Team or Enterprise, ask an owner to enable skills.
- Claude doesn't use the skill
- Name it in your message: "Use the Nonprofit Cost Auditor...". Check that it's enabled under Customize > Skills.
- "openpyxl isn't installed" for an Excel file
- Claude can often install it when your plan allows package downloads. If it can't, save the sheet as CSV and attach that instead.
- Claude says it couldn't check vendors' current pages
- Your plan or organization has web access off. The report still works, using our library's check dates; check the program pages yourself before you act.
- The report misses a vendor you know is in the library
- Card statements abbreviate names. Tell Claude: "That 'INTUIT *QBOOKS' charge is QuickBooks Online," and it reruns with the link.
Still stuck? Help and support.
