How to apply
- Create (or convert to) a GitHub organization account; you must be an organization owner
- On the GitHub for Nonprofits page, click Join GitHub for Nonprofits and authorize the app for your organization
- Select your organization; if it is not already in GitHub's validated database, complete the validation application with country of registration, registration ID and proof of status (e.g. 501(c)(3) letter)
- After the approval email, log back into the GitHub for Nonprofits portal and choose Continue with Team (free Team plan) or Continue with Enterprise Cloud (25% coupon)
- Team: wait up to a week for support to apply it. Enterprise: redeem the coupon at github.com/redeem within 3 months
Catches and limitations
- Copilot and other add-ons are not discounted
- Discounts don't apply to other subscriptions or usage-based billing (e.g. Codespaces compute, extra storage)
- Can't select the free Team plan while on GitHub Enterprise or an Enterprise trial, or if the organization was renamed during the application
- Enterprise Cloud coupon is single-organization and expires 3 months after issue
- Free Team plan is applied manually; allow up to a week
Switching: Minimal for an existing GitHub organization: the plan is changed in place. Personal accounts must be converted to an organization first (conversion is one-way and some personal data such as SSH keys and OAuth tokens does not transfer). Organizations on an Enterprise account or trial must leave it before choosing the free Team plan.
